Monroe Senior center gets donation
The Northwest Latinos United recently donated more then $800 to the East County Senior Center in Monroe.
The senior center helps provide a venue for activities and events hosted by the organization, including fashion shows, dances, Dia de los Murtos and Mexican Independence Day.
“The (senior center) is proud of its long history of outreach and support of the Latino community of Monroe,” said Marc Avni, senior center director. “We are very grateful for this gift from the (Northwest Latinos United).”
Northwest Latinos United is currently inactive.
Soroptomists donate money to groups
The Soroptimist of Marysville recently awarded money to a few local organizations.
Bonnie Ramsey of the Marysville Boys & Girls Club received $500, Ardyce Johnson from the Koinonia Women’s ministry of the Marysville Methodist Church received $600, Joseph’s House received $500 and Housing Hope in Marysville received $300.

Mukilteo singer wins scholarship
America’s Alcohol Certified Education Association recently awarded a $500 scholarship to Will Franz, a Mukilteo singer and songwriter.
Franz’s winning song “Send a Friend” gives a glimpse into a terrifying evening of an 8-year-old boy as he is driven home after a night of drinking by his father.
Franz is a 2008 graduate of Kamiak High School and plans to use the scholarship for music classes at Shoreline Community College this fall. He recently showcased his music for industry representatives in Nashville, Tenn.
New additions to Everett Rotary
Thomas Koenig is the newest president of the Rotary Club of Everett.
He takes over from Randy Hansen and will serve as president through June 2012.
Koenig, of Snohomish, has owned and operated Everett Veterinary Hospital since 1985. He is a graduate of Washington State University.
Koenig has been a rotary member since 1986. He is a Rotary Paul Harris fellow and graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute.
Other members inducted are Will McMahan, Andy Hall, Randy Hansen, Eric Anderson, Larry O’Donnell and Bill Dobler.
New members on the board of directors are Chanelle Carlin, Walt Greenwood, John Mohr and Eileen Simmons.
This year, the Rotary Club of Everett has awarded more than $175,000 in scholarships to local students.
Local quilter in international show
Kathi De Jong from Snohomish is a semifinalist for the annual American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show and Contest beginning in September in Des Moines, Iowa.
De Jong plans to display her quilt titled “Exotica.”
More than $44,000 will be awarded at the show, including $10,000 for the best of show and $5,000 for best hand, machine and longarm workmanship.
