Scout project done in memory of best friend
Jordan Hansen, a 2012 graduate of Stanwood High School and full time employee of Sole Superior in Marysville, is now an Eagle Scout.
To earn the highest rank offered by the Boy Scouts of America, Hansen made a bench in memory of his good friend and fellow Scout, the late Levi Alfieri.
Materials were donated by Skagit Steel, David Waters Sr., Anita Tarlton, Dorothy Simmers, Stanwood Hardware and Darryl Main. The bench is located at the Stanwood-Camano Fairgrounds.
Hansen is a member of Stanwood Boy Scout Troop 86 under the leadership of Gary Overturf. Hansen joined Boy Scouts in 2003 as a third-grade student. His parents are Darren and Wendi Hansen. He is the brother of Brandon, Bailey and Shawna.
Relay for Life fundraiser results
The following are the results of this year’s annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life events in Snohomish County.
Arlington Relay for Life had 1,293 participants, 125 teams and raised $251,137.
Lake Stevens: 842 participants, 80 teams, $138,789 raised.
Marysville-Tulalip: 496 participants, 59 teams, $138,652 raised.
Monroe: 593 participants, 63 teams, $118,246 raised.
Everett: 771 participants, 77 teams, $109,138 raised.
South County: 480 participants, 46 teams, $90,802 raised.
Stanwood-Camano: 559 participants, 60 teams, $57,130 raised.
Mill Creek: 267 participants, 26 teams, $49,796 raised.
Granite Falls (informal): 3 participants, 2 teams, $182 raised.
Arlington names new volunteer manager
Maxine Jenft, who volunteers with the Arlington Cemetery Board and with the police department, has been named the city’s new volunteer coordinator. Nearly 100 people volunteer to perform jobs for the city.

Normanna awards scholarships
Normanna Lodge No. 3 of the Sons of Norway in May presented scholarships to the following students.
They are Karl Bielser and Sara Deeter of Arlington High School, Cole Borseth of Archbiship Murphy High School, Jade Borseth of Stanwood High School, Leiran Cornish of Snohomish High School, Kristie Egge of Marysville Pilchuck High School, Chad Triplett of Glacier Peak High School, Alyssa MacRae of Highline High School and Cameron Gates of Thorson High School.
The lodge also gave Camp Normanna scholarships to Alexandria Stickney, Dylan Richards and Kristen Stickney.
Darrington woman earns Zonta Club honor
The Zonta Club of Everett honored Emily Massingale, a recent graduate of Darrington High School, as this year’s Young Women in Public Affairs winner.
Since 1990 the Young Women in Public Affairs award has recognized pre-college women students who are committed to leadership in public policy, government and volunteer organizations.
Massingale plans to attend the University of Montana with a goal of obtaining a degree in parks and recreation management.

Cocoon House receives foundation grant
The Washington Women’s Foundation has awarded Cocoon House a $100,000 human services grant to support the relocation and renovation of Cocoon House’s U-Turn Drop-In Center. The relocation of U-Turn will offer a larger facility that includes a shower room, laundry and kitchen facilities, and consolidates all outreach and advocacy services in the same location so that at-risk and homeless teens can obtain the resources they need to escape life on the streets.
Established in 1991, Cocoon House provides housing, street outreach and advocacy, and prevention services to teens and their families from throughout Snohomish County.
Feral cat project spays 75,000th cat
Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project Clinic of Lynnwood last month operated on its 75,000th cat, marking a milestone in the program, which is dedicated to preventing unwanted litters and thus decreasing the cat population and decreasing the number of cats that have to be euthanized in community animal shelters.
Opened in 1997, the project provides free birth-control surgeries performed by licensed veterinarians for free-roaming cats.
The non-profit project relies on donations and the efforts of volunteers to maintain free spay and neuter surgeries. More information is at www.feralcatproject.org.
Port Gardner car club makes donations
Port Gardner Vintage Auto Club has presented the club’s annual charity donations to Everett Boys &Girls Club, Cocoon House, Marysville Pilchuck High School auto shop tools scholarships, Arlington Community Food Bank, Burn Center Children’s Recovery Program, Marysville Community Food Bank, Arlington Boys &Girls Club and Animal Rescue Foundation.
Interfaith group receives two grants
The Interfaith Association of Northwest Washington has received grants from Everett Clinic Foundation and EverTrust Foundation.
The money, about $33,000, will be used to support the organization’s Family Shelter. The shelter serves homeless families with children.

Windermere Foundation donates to YMCA
Through the Windermere Foundation, the Windermere Real Estate/North office employees have donated $8,750 to the YMCA for summer camp scholarships.
A portion of the donation comes from the Dick Wood Memorial fund at the Windermere Foundation.
