District workers stuff bus for food banks

The Lakewood School District Transportation Department held a “Stuff the Bus” food drive Nov. 19 in the parking lot of the Arlington Walmart.

Their 40-foot-long bus was filled with donated food for the Marysville Community Food Bank and the Arlington Food Bank. More than 4,000 pounds of food was collected, along with $273 in cash and gift cards.

Dinner supports cancer services

More than 500 hundred people attended the Swedish Edmonds Imagine Gala, Celebrating Change on Nov. 18 at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

The gala included live music, dinner, and silent and live auctions that raised more than $420,000 to support the funding of charity care and a major expansion of cancer services at Swedish Edmonds Hospital.

The new cancer facility is on schedule to open in 2012.

Dr. Richard McGee was among the guest speakers at the Imagine Gala as well as Dr. Rod Hochman, president and chief executive officer for Swedish, and David Jaffe, interim chief administrative officer for Swedish Edmonds.

The Campaign for Swedish is the largest fundraising campaign in the Swedish Foundation’s history. It has raised more than $84 million and has helped fund a wide range of programs and initiatives across Swedish Health Services since the campaign began in 2007.

Donation for Future of Flight Foundation

The Future of Flight Foundation in Mukilteo recently received $15,000 for an educational project related to aerospace technology.

The donation was made by the PPG Industries Foundation headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Future of Flight Foundation plans to use the money to create the first-ever experiential wind tunnel environment to engage guests at the Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour in Mukilteo. The exhibit is set to include interactive displays and offer students an opportunity to conduct after-hours experiments at the Future of Flight.

PPG Industries Foundation also has donated $15,000 to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.

Mayor honors minority achievers

Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring recently announced Octavio Ubin Mendez Dias as Volunteer of the Month for October.

The teen received the award during the Nov. 14 Marysville City Council meeeting.

Octavio, 16, attends Marysville Getchell High School in the Academy of Construction and Engineering. He is active in the Snohomish County YMCA Minority Achievers Program, or MAP.

The program is made up of a group of teens who motivate and support each other and other students of color to achieve higher educational and career goals.

He was nominated by Wendy Messarina-Volosin, who serves on the Mayor’s Diversity Advisory Committee, the Marysville Community Coalition and is the English Language Learners Parent and Community liaison for Spanish in the Marysville School District.

Everett girl wins Pokemon tourney

Everett resident Sarah Anderson, 8, won third place at the 2011 Marysville Pokemon City Championships on Sunday.

She earned a top city ranking and championship points playing the card game which count toward a potential invitation to the Pokemon U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. held in the summer.
