Marine Corps Maj. Gen. James A. Kessler, a Mountlake Terrace native, is retiring this summer from the Marine Corps. Most recently he served as the commander of Marine Corps Installations Command, National Capital Regional Command, Arlington, Va. Kessler provided oversight and direction for 24 Marine Corps installations worldwide, encompassing 12,000 facilities on 2.5 million acres, with 30,000 management personnel and a $4 billion budget. Kessler, who graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School in 1976, began his 33-year Marine Corps career when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant by his brother, now retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mike Kessler, when Jim Kessler graduated in June 1980 from the University of Washington. His overseas deployments included Kuwait, Iraq and Okinawa. He also served as an aide to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Kessler earned advanced degrees in military studies from Marine Corps University, a master of science in systems management from the University of Southern California, and a master of science in national resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He was promoted to his current rank as a two-star general in 2010. His mother Nancy Thurmond lives in Everett, and his sister Colleen Jones lives in Marysville. Kessler is married to Debbi Eaton Kessler, also a Mountlake Terrace graduate.
Air Force Airman Trevor J. Eddy graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Eddy is the son of Cyndie and Kevin Eddy of Lynnwood. He is a 2008 graduate of Lynnwood High School.
Army Reserve Pvt. David J. Dunn-LaFrance has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Dunn-LaFrance is the brother of Shelby Dunn-LaFrance of Snohomish. He is a 2012 graduate of Mariner High School.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Abram F. Goodloe, son of Margo Beth and Gerald Goodloe of Snohomish, along with 90 other sailors aboard the USS Freedom, recently conducted an amphibious assault exercise with Malaysian Army paratroopers. Goodloe is a 1996 graduate of Snohomish High School and joined the Navy in March 2004.
Army Pfc. Timothy B. Fender Jr. has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Fender is the son of Timothy and Suzanne Fender of Oak Harbor. He is a 2009 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
Army Reserve Pvt. Brandon J. Moser has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Moser is a 2012 graduate of Marysville Pilchuck High School.
Air Force 1st Lt. Christopher Ames has completed training at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, and is now a B-1 Lancer Bomber pilot. He is stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D. Ames is the son of Rusty and Debby Ames of Lake Stevens. He is a 2006 graduate of Lake Stevens High School and a 2010 graduate of the University of Washington.
