Scholarships: Two offered by gardeners
The Alderwood Garden Club is offering a $1,000 Scholarship and a $500 Floy Poe Memorial Scholarship to a student in horticulture or a horticulture-related field. The application deadline is Wednesday.
Applicants must be graduating seniors in an Edmonds School District high school or attending Lake Washington Technical College who plan to enroll in a horticulture-related program in any college or school for fall of 2009. Donate: Food drive set by EvCC group
Everett Community College’s Student Programs Board is collecting nonperishable food for the Volunteers of America Food Bank until June 1.
Donation bins are located throughout campus. Donations can also be dropped off at EvCC’s Student Activities Office in Parks Hall, Room 209.
Volunteers of America operates two food banks, one serving Everett residents and one serving north Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.

Grow: Self-esteem course for girls
“Be Extraordinary! Day for Girls” will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday May 2 at the Snohomish Boys &Girls Club, 402 Second St., Snohomish.
The event is open to all girls ages 12 to 18, as well as parents, educators, and anyone else who is interested in spending a day learning about self-esteem, family relationships, community service, and many other topics important to young women.
Each attendee will receive a T-shirt with the Snohomish Boys &Girls Club Smart Girls Slogan “I WANT to be, I WILL be, I AM Extraordinary!” and lunch, snacks and a goodie bag. To register, e-mail mowens@bgcsc.org, or call Marci Owens at 360-568-7760.
Recycle: Old cell phones can help
Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is collecting cell phones to be recycled to help women in need. Cell phones even without service can call 911 when charged and may be given to victims of domestic violence to keep them safe.
Older phones or phones that are broken, missing chargers, etc. can be sent to phone recyclers, who will pay from 50 cents to 20 dollars per phone. Money received from phone recycling is used to help fund programs and services offered to victims of domestic violence and their children.

Benefit: Flower sale aids museum
Granite Falls Historical Society Museum will hold a perennial flower sale from noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 2 and 3 at 109 E. Union St., Granite Falls. A horticulturalist will be on site and bird houses and feeders will be sale.
Benefit: Plant sale aids women’s group
The Immaculate Conception Women’s Group in Arlington will hold its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Arlington City Hall Plaza. Annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and rhubarb will be available for purchase. Proceeds help local community food banks as well as supplies for local school children. Call 360-474-1658.
