The Island County Chapter of the American Red Cross seeks donations to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disasters such as the recent flooding.

Fundraiser: Lincoln Day Dinner
The Island County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner and Silent Auction will be Feb. 28 at the Elks Club, 155 NE Ernst St., Oak Harbor.
Herb Meyer will give a presentation entitled “What in the World is Going On: An Intelligence Briefing for Island County Republicans.” Meyer is a former official with the National Intelligence Council and special assistant to the director of Central Intelligence during the Reagan administration.
Cost is $40 per person for dinner. The evening will start with a reception at 5 p.m. Dinner begins at 7.

Learn: Foster parenting discussed
A free introduction to foster parenting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m., Friday at Compass Health in Everett. The class is open to community members.
Learn how children enter foster care, about therapeutic foster care, what the requirements are to become a foster parent and how you can make a difference in the life of a child.

Teach: Become a Sound Steward
People For Puget Sound offers its free Sound Stewardship training beginning Feb. 26 in Everett.
Classroom and field instruction includes regional history, ecology, identifying native and invasive plants, weed control, and planting techniques.
In return for 12 hours of training, Sound Stewards are asked to commit to 40 volunteer hours over the next year at a restoration site of their choice. Hands-on restoration projects in Snohomish County currently include sites at Union Slough, Jetty Island, Picnic Point and Kayak Point.
