Community Extra: Opportunities

Volunteer: Older adults needed

Are you over the age of 55 and want to give back to the community?

Get involved with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which matches older volunteers with hundreds of opportunities throughout Snohomish County.

The program is sponsored by Catholic Community Services Northwest. Volunteers receive personal recognition, meet new people and share skills acquired through a lifetime of work.

They also get free supplemental liability, accident and automobile insurance coverage while doing volunteer work.

The two-day class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 11. It costs $12 for current AARP members and $14 for non-members.

The class will take place at Marysville Fire Station 66, 7217 40th St. NE.

Visit: Tour historic Edmonds cemetery

Take a “Walk Back in Time” through the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery & Columbarium.

The tour is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at 820 15th St. SW in Edmonds. It consists of three sections and lasts about 45 minutes.

The 6.5-acre cemetery was founded in 1891 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. Some graves date as far back as the Spanish American and Civil wars.

Many Edmonds founders and 14 of the city’s 34 mayors are buried in the cemetery.

The walk is conducted by members of the cemetery board. Several board members will be donning period costumes during the tour.

Clean: Lake Stickney cleanup

Come in your grubby clothes to work on the site of a future park on Lake Stickney.

The work party is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10. Participants will meet at 13521 Manor Way, Lynnwood. Volunteers need to pre-register.

Gloves, tools and lunch will be provided.

The event is sponsored by Snohomish County Parks Department, Lake Stickney Conservancy, REI and Earthcore.

Help: Volunteer for Edmonds arts

Edmonds Center for the Arts is recruiting 40 new volunteers for its upcoming season.

Volunteers are needed to serve as ticket takers, ushers, concessions workers and bartenders, to work in administrative offices and to help with special projects.

“Our volunteers are all ages and come from all walks of life,” said Jim Kristian, a spokesman for the center. “The common denominator is that they all have a desire to serve their community and the arts.”
