Help: Give packages to local kids

The YWCA of King and Snohomish Counties needs your help to provide spring baskets for children in its transitional housing programs.

The deadline to give packages is April 22. Candy, toys, socks, toothbrushes and games all make good basket fille

rs. Monetary donations also are accepted.

Baskets can be dropped off during business hours Monday through Friday at Pathways for Women shelter, 6027 208th St. SW, Lynnwood, and the YWCA Everett office, 3301 Broadway.

Join: YMCA hosts health fair

Saturday is Healthy Kids Day at the Mukilteo YMCA.

Free family activities are planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym and parking lot. A bouncy house, a pony, face painting, healthy food and drink samples, and performances are scheduled.

YMCA membership joining fees are waived Friday through Sunday. Mukilteo Family YMCA is at 10601 47th Place W., Mukilteo.

Buy: Garage sale benefits charity

HOPE Therapeutic Riding Center is gearing up for a garage sale to raise money for its program.

The Whidbey-based center helps people with disabilities through horseback riding.

The annual sale is a major fundraiser for organization. People pay by donation and all funds benefit HOPE.

Donations from the community are needed for the sale, planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 at the American Legion, 14096 Highway 525 in Langley. Electronics and used clothes don’t sell, so please don’t bring them.

The center also needs volunteers to set up the day before the sale and to help during the sale.

Swim: Water safety

Go for a refreshing swim Saturday and learn skills that could save a life. The annual April Pools Day is 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Forest Park Swim Center, 802 E. Mukilteo Blvd.

All ages are invited to play games, put on life jackets, ride in canoes and kayaks, and learn about safety.

This event, sponsored by Everett Parks and Recreation and the Drowning Prevention Coalition, aims to reduce drowning deaths.

Please bring canned food or monetary donation for local food banks as admission.

Tip: Fundraiser for Special Olympics

Local police officers plan to play waiters and waitresses today for a good cause.

The Tip-a-Cop event is from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Lynnwood Claim Jumper restaurant, 18725 33rd Ave. W. Several police agencies plan to participate. All the money raised will go to Special Olympics Washington.

Learn: Car maintenance

South Whidbey Senior Center is offering a free seminar on how to make informed decisions about car maintenance and how to avoid bad repair shops. The seminar is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at South Whidbey Senior Center, 14594 Highway 525, Langley. Topics include how to budget for car repairs and handle emergencies, what to do about warning lights and more.
