Swing: Jazz bands serve up sweets, tunesJazz bands at Kamiak and Arlington high schools each plan swing dance events to raise money for their programs.
Kamiak High School’s Big Band Dance is set for 2-4 p.m. Sunday in the commons. The school is located at 10801 Harbour Pointe Blvd., Mukilteo. Tickets are $10 at the door and include sweets, Ivar’s clam chowder and plenty of dancing.
Arlington High School’s jazz bands transform their commons into the “Easy G Jazz Club” with their annual Swing Into Spring Dessert Dance, 7 p.m. May 9 and 10. Tickets are $12.50, which includes dessert and beverages, and are available at the door. Or reserve table seating at www.greateventseats.com/events.php?lID=104. The school is located at 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.

Plant: Kids can create for Mom’s DayKids Plant for Mom’s Day will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 10 at the Edmonds Farmer’s Market, Fifth Avenue North and Bell Street. Children are invited to plant pots with flowers to give their mothers for Mother’s Day. Edmonds in Bloom volunteers will assist.
A $9 donation is requested.
Also happening that day is a Children’s Fairy Flower Parade, starting at noon from the Edmonds Library (650 Main St.), and an opportunity to make a free Mother’s Day card at C’est La Vie (320 Fifth Ave. S.).

Chug: Celebrate trains at open houseThe Swamp Creek and Western Railroad Association of Edmonds hosts an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 10 for National Train Day. The association’s home is in the Edmonds Amtrak Depot, 210 Railroad Ave.
The association’s model train layout features 400 feet of HO-scale track that passes through miniature towns and detailed scenery as it follows an actual surveyed route over White Pass from Yakima to Vancouver.
Admission is free. Children must be attended. Wheelchair access is limited.

Listen: Harp concert benefits Housing HopeLocal harpist Bronn Journey hosts a community concert at 7 p.m. May 10 to benefit Housing Hope and its upcoming Monroe Family Village development, a 47-unit project for homeless and low-income families in the Sky Valley.
The Monroe Community Concert for Hope will feature several local artists, including Journey, at the Wagner Performing Arts Center, 639 W. Main St., Monroe. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/647178 or at the door. Donations also will be requested.
Monroe Family Village is the largest development in Housing Hope’s history. The project, which has been in the works for almost two years, will include homeless and affordable-rent units and more than 3,700 square feet of common area space.

The Economic Development Commission has two openings; applications will be accepted until seats are filled. Parade: Everett July 4th entries due May 16Everett is seeking creative entries for the annual Colors of Freedom Fourth of July parade.
Parade applicants will be reviewed by the parade committee and will be selected based upon the following criteria: creativity, enhancement of the parade’s theme (“Colors of Freedom”) and incorporation of music.
