Mark: Celebrate Juneteenth in Everett
NAACP Snohomish County and Everett Community College’s Black Student Union hold a Juneteenth celebration, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Henry M. Jackson Park, 1700 State St., Everett.
Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth marks the day — June 19, 1865 — when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with 2,000 troops and an order saying “all slaves are free.” It was two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s executive order ending slavery.
Enjoy a community potluck with free hot dogs, family friendly music and entertainment, field games for kids and teens, and an educational focus on the desegregation of Boston schools.
