Fire officials concentrate on readiness

Fire departments throughout Snohomish County plan to participate in the 2007 International Fire and Emergency Medical Services Safety Stand Down this week.

The Stand Down is sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Members of the Snohomish County Training Officers Association are coordinating activities for their individual fire departments.

With a “Ready to Respond” theme, the events focus on preparing firefighters for their daily duties by reviewing their safety training and the proper use of equipment in order to reduce deaths and injuries.

Activities planned include a daily moment of silence to remember firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

Try YMCA camps as child-care option

For parents who work outside of the home, YMCA camp provides an alternative to regular child care.

A range of YMCA summer programs are available for kids ranging in age from kindergarten through high school.

Activities include arts and crafts, cooking, drama, science, horseback riding, games, sports, swimming and field trips.

Teen Xtreme Adventure camps, with rock climbing and river rafting, are designed specifically for teenagers.

YMCA summer programs are offered through all five Snohomish County YMCA branches. Mothers and More supports moms

The south Snohomish County chapter of Mothers and More is a nonprofit group working to improve the lives of mothers through support, activities, education and advocacy. The group meets for children’s playgroups, moms’ outings and family activities.

Fundraiser to fight diabetes Oct. 6

Registration is being taken now for Step Out to Fight Diabetes, a fundraising event planned for Oct. 6 at the Tulalip Amphitheater.

Registration forms for the walk event are available at the American Diabetes Association, 2805 Colby Ave., Everett and online at www.diabetes.org/stepout.

Scout’s dress drive gets girls to proms

Through June 30, Jackson High School junior Amber Navran is conducting a dress drive for Cinderella’s Trunk as a part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

Cinderella’s Trunk, a nonprofit organization, is particularly in need of jewelry, purses, wraps and new or gently used dresses or gowns in all fabrics, sizes and colors.

Amber’s goal is to collect 100 dresses and accessories for young women who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend a formal event.
