United Way offers free help on taxes

United Way of Snoho­mish County has expanded its free tax preparation and e-filing services, seeking to help more low-income people claim tax refunds and credits.

The nonprofit group is operating four tax preparation sites this year.

Free tax help is available 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through April 15 at Cedar Valley Community School, 19200 56th Ave. W., Lynnwood; and North Middle School, 2514 Rainier Ave., Everett. No appointment is necessary at these sites.

Free tax preparation also will be available 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 6 through 27, at Stanwood-Camano Community Resource Center, 9620 271st St. NW, Stanwood. For an appointment, call 360-629-5257. In Sultan, tax help will be available 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 through 26, at Sky Valley Family Resource Center, 701 First St., Sultan. For an appointment, call 425-374-5506.

Tax-return help available at EdCC

Trained accounting volunteers from Edmonds Community College plan to prepare and electronically file income tax returns for people with incomes of less than $40,000.

The free services are available 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 19 through March 13; 1 to 5:30 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 29, March 7 and 14; 3 to 5:30 p.m. April 8 and 10; and 1 to 5:30 p.m. April 11 in Mountlake Terrace Hall 212, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

Camp Fire candy sale starts Friday

The 2008 Camp Fire USA candy sale is to begin Friday in Snohomish County.

The candy is available for $5 a box through Feb. 19.

Look for Camp Fire members in front of grocery stores, banks and other businesses, or call 425-258-KIDS for information.

Proceeds from the candy sale benefit ongoing Camp Fire programs. The young candy sellers also earn prizes, credit for Camp Fire summer camp and refunds for their clubs.

Elks Lodge offers student contests

Everett Elks Lodge 479 is sponsoring an essay contest and a poster contest with the theme “Drugs? Don’t Get Me Started!” Prizes of $50 savings bonds are planned.

The essay contest is for students in grades five through eight. Essays, up to 500 words, will be judged on originality, thoughtfulness, grammar, appearance and message.

The poster contest is for students in grades three through six. Maximum poster size is 81/2 by 11 inches, and no copyrighted images are allowed. Posters will be judged on originality, neatness and grammar.

Entries are due by Feb. 19 to Everett Elks 479, P.O. Box 13227, Everett, WA 98206-3227. Include the contestant’s name, parent’s name, address, phone number, school, teacher’s name and grade level. Call 425-252-4179 for information.

Interfaith event benefits shelter

The Interfaith Association of Northwest Washington will host its annual dinner and auction at 5 p.m. Feb. 2 at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help, Henson Hall, 2619 Cedar St., Everett.

The fundraising event supports the Interfaith Family Shelter, which houses homeless families as well as other Interfaith programs.
