Mill Creek book club hosts “Red Tent” talk

The Mill Creek Evening Book Group hosts a book discussion led by Roy DeSoto starting at 7 p.m. today at the Mill Creek Library, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway, Mill Creek.

DeSoto plans to discuss Anita Diamant’s book “Red Tent,” a novel about biblical times and its customs as seen through the lives of Rachel, Leah and Dinah. The event is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Creek Library.

Senior center invites public to luau, BBQ

The South County Senior Center hosts a series of August activities at its facility at 220 Railroad Ave., Edmonds.

An outdoor luau featuring food, hula dancers and Hawaiian music is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the senior center dining room. The cost is $15 per person.

An arts and crafts, hobbies and collectibles show is set for 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday in the senior center dining room, featuring handmade items for sale. The admission fee is $10 for guests, free for members.

A barbecue is set for 5 p.m. Monday at the senior center patio, sponsored by the Edmonds-Westgate QFC. The cost is $5 per person.

Arlington holds free kids’ haircut day

Ronin Northwest and the Haller Point Market play host to a kids’ haircut day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Haller Point Market, 604 E. Gilman Ave., Arlington. The event is to benefit Kids Kloset. Professional stylists plan to offer free haircuts for kids ages 4 to 18.

New and gently used clothing donations will also be accepted. Ronin Northwest owner, Tasha Branch plans to match new clothes donations up to $400 in retail value received the day of the event.

Mukilteo seeks artists for final art walk

The final summer Mukilteo Art Walk is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Old Town Mukilteo and organizers seek artists for the event.

The event is presented by the Mukilteo Arts Guild, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts and artists in the greater Puget Sound region.

Help bail leaders from jail for March of Dimes

The March of Dimes “Jail and Bail” is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Flying Pig Brewing Co., 2929 Colby Ave., Everett. The annual fundraiser features community leaders “serving time” in hourly shifts for various “infractions” such as smiling too much on a Monday, reckless window shopping and other fun charges.

Community members serve time and raise donations to the March of Dimes. Donations are slated to support March of Dimes research, community services, education and advocacy.

Arts group extends deadline to Aug. 30

The Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission has extended its deadline for art submissions to Aug. 30. The group seeks paintings, prints, drawings, miniatures, calligraphy, photographs and three-dimensional works for its 30th annual juried art show in September.

More than $3,000 in cash awards and art merchandise is available this year for prizes.

Artists should submit entries as digital photos, saved to a CD and mailed with the entry fee of $10 per piece with a limit of three entries per category to Friends of the Arts, 5303 228th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043.
