SEATTLE — Two of the pontoons delivered to Lake Washington for a new Highway 520 floating bridge will go into drydock to repair cracks.
One pontoon will be towed next week to Portland and the other will be drydocked at Harbor Island in Seattle.
The Seattle Times reported two other pontoons have had other pieces attached and can’t be moved out of the lake. A cofferdam will be wrapped around portions of the pontoons and the water pumped out so workers can seal their cracks.
Construction manager Dave Becher says the repairs will cost tens of millions of dollars. The costs are being negotiated with bridge contractor Kiewit-General-Manson.
Meanwhile, a new pontoon arrives Friday at the Seattle lake. It’s part of the second batch of bridge pontoons built at Grays Harbor.
