REDMOND, Ore. — The Deschutes County sheriff’s office says a resident north of Redmond, Ore., shot and killed a cougar after a neighbor called for help when she discovered the big cat perched eight feet up in a tree in her yard.
Sgt. Troy Gotchy said a woman reported she was outside Friday with her 5-year-old child and her dog when the dog began barking under a juniper tree in the front yard.
The homeowner went to check and saw the cougar sitting on a branch of the tree, with the child playing about five feet away on the ground.
Gotchy said the woman pulled her child into the house and contacted a neighbor, who came and killed the cougar.
Oregon wildlife agents and a state police game trooper responded and found a young male cougar weighing about 100 pounds.
Officials determined the cougar was shot due to the threat it posed. No citations were issued.
