EVERETT — Later this month, 20 high school marching bands and more than 2,000 students will descend on downtown.
City council members on Wednesday gave their blessing to close some streets for the event. But certain council members weren’t happy with what appeared to be a last-minute request to close streets for the Sausage Fest that starts today at noon and continues until midnight.
Hours are the same on Saturday and from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The event is sponsored by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, which asked the council to close the street.
Though the council ultimately approved closing part of Cedar Street for the annual event, councilman Bob Overstreet questioned why the council was viewing the street-closure request for the first time just two days before the event.
To try and help solve the problem in the future, councilman Dale Pope suggested that the Sausage Fest application be reviewed every three years, which would make yearly street closure for the event more certain.
City staff agreed to look into the matter.
As for the 14th annual Puget Sound Festival of Marching Bands competition, the council approved closing Lombard and Oakes avenues from 35th Street to Everett Memorial Stadium for the Oct. 27 event.
The competition, sponsored by Cascade High School Band and Color Guard Boosters, gathers students from Washington, Oregon and Idaho to promote high school music programs.
