EVERETT – Snohomish County’s old administration and courthouse buildings in downtown Everett needs $1.4 million in emergency repairs.
Mark Thunberg, the county’s new facilities director, said both buildings must be pressure-washed and sealed with caulk. Leaks have developed, officials said.
The heaters and air conditioning in the west administration building were installed 35 years ago and faces “catastrophic failure” if it is not replaced, Thunberg said.
The county has spent $180,000 in the past five years trying to keep the system running.
The County Council approved the spending Wednesday, mostly using bonds borrowed in 2005 but not spent.
County holds forums on pollution, urban centers
Snohomish County is rewriting its rules for managing pollution and urban centers zones and plans two public forums today.
The meetings are at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the county east administration building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.
The county faces stricter rules for controlling stormwater and pollutants and must rewrite its rules.
Also, the county wants to write permanent rules to allow planned urban centers in unincorporated county areas.

Whidbey Island: Fire destroys mobile home
Fire crews battled a two-alarm blaze at a double-wide mobile home on Heggenes Road in Clinton on Wednesday afternoon.
The home was lost, but no one was injured, South Whidbey Deputy Fire Chief Mike Cotton said.
The man who owns the residence came home to find it ablaze. He lives there by himself.
“He let his dogs out,” Cotton said. “We did the rest.”
Fire crews arrived on the scene about 4 p.m., he said. They fought against high winds and power lines that were knocked down when the blaze licked at their poles.
The fire was controlled and extinguished in about four hours, Cotton said.
The incident is under investigation.
