Snohomish County’s plan for 20 years of increasing population and cars moves forward today with a special briefing by the County Council.
Whether the county can afford to pay for the roads, parks and other projects to match the plans for development is unclear. Documents to be released today are expected to shed light on that debate.
Council Chairman Gary Nelson said he hopes the council agrees by consensus on the development and policy proposals.
Projections call for 930,000 people – about 275,000 more than today – to live here by 2025 under a plan proposed by County Executive Aaron Reardon and recommended by the county planning commission.
The county is projected to fall $225 million to $236 million short for transportation projects under the Reardon and County Council plans.
Those figures are included in a report released Tuesday assessing the effects of the county’s competing plans for development and transportation.
Final votes by the County Council are scheduled for Dec. 21, the last meeting of the year.
