EVERETT — The new year started Wednesday with a fresh batch of Snohomish County elected officials being sworn into office.
Two new Democratic County Councilmen, Mike Cooper and Brian Sullivan, replace Gary Nelson and Kirke Sievers, respectively. Nelson was on the council for 13 years and Sievers for 12.
This is going to be an exciting year, said County Councilman Dave Somers, who was named chairman of the five-member council.
“We’ve got tremendous challenges and tremendous opportunities,” Somers said.
Cooper will be vice chairman. Democrats have a 4-1 majority on the council.
Sievers marks 33 years in office and counting, as he merely moved offices and took control of the county’s bank accounts as the new county treasurer.
He was previously treasurer for 21 years; in November voters agreed to give him the job again.
New County Clerk Sonya Kraski was sworn in and replaces Pam Daniels, who oversaw the Superior Court clerks for 12 years.
County Executive Aaron Reardon took his second oath of office and begins a second term as the head of county government.
He said he was excited and eager to “begin the people’s work.”
Sheriff John Lovick previously took his oath of office and took the reins from Rick Bart. County Auditor Carolyn Diepenbrock and Assessor Cindy Portmann faced no opponents in the November elections and also were sworn in.
