County’s 9/11 events mark 13th anniversary of attacks

Events are planned around Snohomish County on Thursday to mark the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The city of Arlington is set to unveil and dedicate its 9/11 memorial at 6 p.m. Thursday in front of Fire Station 46, 115 N. Macleod Ave.

The memorial, built in an alcove on the outside of the fire station, includes a 13-foot, 4,373-pound steel beam from the World Trade Center. Four Arlington firefighters drove across the country to pick up the artifact and bring it back to Arlington. It is one of only a handful in the state.

Local businesses donated materials, expertise and money to complete the memorial.

Tours of the memorial and the fire station are offered following the unveiling and a brief dedication ceremony. Firefighters from Oso, Stanwood and other parts of north county also plan to attend Arlington’s event.

The city of Lynnwood’s remembrance will coincide with the farmers market from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Wilcox Park, 5215 196th St. SW. Police and firefighters will be there to answer safety questions and provide tours of emergency rigs. Edmonds Family Medicine staff will provide free blood pressure checks and diabetes testing.

In addition, Cedar Valley Community School folks will be there collecting donations for emergency kits for students. Requested items include bottled water, waterproof ponchos, flashlights and batteries, packets of shelf-stable snacks, canopies, tarps, duct tape and bungee cords. Snacks should not include any peanut products.

Lynnwood firefighters plan a brief memorial service and moment of silence at the Fire Station 15 flagpole, 18800 44th Ave. W. The ceremony starts at 6:55 a.m.

The Marysville Fire District Honor Guard ceremony will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Police and Firefighters Memorial at the Marysville Public Library, 6120 Grove Street. The ceremony also honors Lt. Jeff Thornton who died from cancer on Sept. 11, 2001.

In Snohomish, chaplain Margie Jacobson will preside over a short ceremony beginning about 7:15 a.m. at Fire Station 43, 1525 Ave. D in the east parking lot near the flagpole. The public is welcome.

A ceremony in Lake Stevens was held this past weekend.

The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York killed 2,753 people, an attack on the Pentagon killed 184 and 40 people died on Flight 93, which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the al-Qaida hijackers.
