EVERETT — The first day back from winter break was cut short for students at Mariner High School after a "credible" bomb threat was made against the school.
About 2,000 students and teachers were sent home about 11:20 a.m. Monday after the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office received word of the threat, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
An e-mail message about a bomb going off at noon was sent to the FBI tip line in Washington, D.C., she said.
"I can’t tell you what the message said but the tone of the threat caused enough concern" to evacuate the school, Jorgensen said.
The information was received too late to cancel school before students arrived, Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz said.
Students were in class while police and a Washington State Patrol bomb-sniffing dog searched the gym, the cafeteria, hallways and lockers, he said. Teachers also were asked to search their classrooms for anything suspicious.
Nothing was found.
"As a precaution we decided to send students and staff home," Muntz said.
