COUPEVILLE — The U.S. Coast Guard and divers from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office searched late into the night Sunday for a crab fisherman whose empty boat was found with its motor running off Penn Cove on Whidbey Island, officials said.
The Swinomish Tribal Fisheries Patrol reported spotting the unmanned 32-foot fishing boat around 1 p.m., Coast Guard Lt. Krysia Pohl said.
A marine broadcast was made but no one had seen the man whose name, age and hometown were not available Sunday night.
A Coast Guard helicopter from Port Angeles and two Coast Guard vessels searched the waters, Pohl said.
“They are going to continue looking for the individual through the evening and into tomorrow morning,” she said.
Pairs of divers from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office took turns searching beneath the surface. Part of their search concentrated on areas near the crab pot lines and beneath the boat, Pohl said.
