EVERETT — The Daily Herald has hired a new general assignment reporter, Will Geschke, to report on issues in Snohomish County.
Geschke graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in 2022. He was accepted into the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism that year, which matches journalism students seeking internships with local news partners across Oregon.
After being placed at The News-Review in Roseburg, Oregon, for his internship, Geschke worked there for two years as a full-time general assignment reporter, photojournalist and special sections editor.
During his time at The News-Review, he received two third-place awards and one second-place award for his photojournalism from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.
“Having worked with Will before at The News-Review, I nearly jumped with joy when I saw that he applied here,” said Mike Henneke, interim managing editor at The Herald. “My biggest question during the interview process: When can you start.”
The hiring comes after nearly half of The Daily Herald’s staff was laid off in June following an ownership change when Mississippi-based Carptenter Media Group purchased The Herald’s parent company, Black Press, in March. Owners said the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan to improve the economics of the newspaper and better serve the community.
When he’s not working, Geschke enjoys watching movies, listening to music and obsessively taking photos. He is excited to tell stories important to the community in Snohomish County.
Geschke will cover a variety of topics at the Herald. Tips are appreciated.
