Three reporters for The Daily Herald received awards in the 2020 Northwest Excellence in Journalism competition, which recognizes news coverage in a five-state region.
Results from the judging, conducted by a Society of Professional Journalists regional chapter, were announced Wednesday. The Herald competed among similar-sized news organizations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
Caleb Hutton won first place in the crime and law enforcement reporting category for “Solved: For 43 years, she was ‘Precious’ Jane Doe,” a story that detailed the use of groundbreaking forensic technology to identify a young woman murdered near Everett in 1977.
Zachariah Bryan was runner up in the hard news feature writing category for “After TikTok craze at Eagle Falls, his body is still missing,” an account of efforts to recover the body of young drowning victim and a father’s calls to have the popular swimming hole shut down.
Cameron Van Til was recognized as a runner up in two categories, sports reporting and sports feature writing, for his story “‘Moneyball’ comes to high school sports, 3 points at a time,” which explored how the long-range jump shot is changing the nature of the game.
