LYNNWOOD — One of three suspects who exchanged gunfire with Lynnwood police Sunday later checked into an Oregon hospital with gunshot wounds — the first suggestion that anyone was injured in the shootout, investigators said.
Lynnwood police have identified the three suspects, but haven’t arrested them yet, spokesperson Maren McKay said Friday.
The wounded 18-year-old’s exact role in the incident remained unclear.
Around 7 p.m. Sunday, officers were investigating a theft in the Target parking lot at 18305 Alderwood Mall Parkway when they saw a stolen Hyundai enter the lot, according to the Lynnwood Police Department. The Hyundai appeared to target two teens, ages 13 and 15, who were walking through the parking lot.
The Hyundai driver intentionally hit the 15-year-old boy, sending him to the ground with minor injuries, police said Monday afternoon. Investigators believed there was no prior relationship between the occupants of the Hyundai and the teens.
Officers tried to stop the people in the Hyundai, but they drove away, police said. Officers pursued. The chase led onto an I-5 south ramp at 36th Avenue W.
Police performed what’s known as a PIT maneuver and trapped the trio’s car. Before officers could get out of their patrol cars, the occupants ran away, with one of them shooting at police. Three officers returned fire. No officers were injured, according to the department.
Two days later, investigators learned an 18-year-old Lynnwood man was in a Portland, Oregon, hospital getting treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team.
The team, known as SMART, was tasked with investigating the shooting that police previously believed ended without any injuries. The team, known as SMART, is made up of a cadre of detectives who investigate police use of force.
Lynnwood police were investigating the criminal aspect of the pursuit and shootout. SMART was investigating the use of force by Lynnwood officers.
