SNOHOMISH — The death of a 2-year-old Snohomish boy in northern California this week remains under investigation.
The boy was struck by a car on Monday in a parking lot in Castella, a small town south of Mount Shasta. He later died at a Mount Shasta hospital.
His family had stopped at a gas station in Castella, the Associated Press reported. Investigators believe the boy may have been following his siblings into the store when he was hit.
The accident could be under investigation for some time, said officer Kim Baldi, with the California Highway Patrol’s office in Mount Shasta.
Officers there are trying to find witnesses, Baldi said Friday. They took numerous statements from people who were at the scene, but it appears nobody actually saw how the boy was struck.
They’ve also called back everyone who reported the incident to 911.
“It’s very unfortunate that no one was even aware it occurred until they noticed the little boy lying there,” he said.
Investigators seized a car they believe was involved, Baldi said. The car was processed and later released, but it has not been confirmed as the vehicle that hit the boy.
As of Friday afternoon, nobody had been arrested or cited.
The boy’s name has not been released, but others in the family have been notified, Baldi said.
His death also is under investigation by the Siskiyou County coroner. The sheriff’s department there doesn’t expect the medical examiner’s report for six to eight weeks, a spokeswoman said.
