A compromise bill to raise the level of federal debt and lower the amount of federal spending is headed to the president for signing.
The U.S. Senate approved the measure this morning on a 74-26 vote with Washington’s Democratic senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell supporting pasasge.
On Monday, the U.S. House passed it by a 269-161 margin. There were 95 Democrats and 66 Republicans who voted against it.
Seven of nine House members from Washington backed the bill. Supporting it were Republican Reps. Dave Reichert, Doc Hastings, Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Jaime Herrera Beutler and Democratic Reps. Rick Larsen, Jay Inslee and Norm Dicks. Democratic Reps. Adam Smith of Tacoma and Jim McDermott of Seattle opposed the bill
