BELLINGHAM — Trident Seafoods Corp. is laying off at least 65 of its 90 hourly workers because of a decrease in crab catches in Alaska.
The layoffs will take effect by December, company officials said.
"This is a very sad day for the people who work at Trident," company president Chuck Bundrant said. "Many of the people who will be impacted by this reduction are longtime Trident employees."
Some salaried employees will also be laid off, the company said.
Trident will continue processing salmon and a limited amount of pollock. But the drop in the availability of king and snow crab from Alaska is forcing it to close the crab-processing portion of its business, the company said.
