An Everett-area man charged with the Dec. 11 stabbing and shooting death of Gail Jubie is not denying involvement in the killing, only denying that he planned the murder.
A Snohomish County jury Tuesday listened to opening statements in the case of Brandon Kenneth White, 20. He is charged with aggravated first-degree murder and faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without possibility of release.
Deputy prosecutor Craig Matheson told jurors there is "overwhelming" evidence that White killed Jubie, 37, during a botched robbery at her home on Sunnyside Boulevard east of Everett.
Jubie was shot in the head and stabbed and slashed 20 times.
"The viciousness of the attack on Gail Jubie can only be matched by the senselessness" of the crime, Matheson said.
One of White’s attorneys, public defender Mary Beth Dingledy, said there is no question White was in Jubie’s home the morning she was killed and that he repeatedly lied to police about his involvement.
The trial will really focus on whether White premeditated Jubie’s killing, a necessary element of aggravated murder, or if his actions are more in keeping with a lesser degree of homicide, Dingledy said.
Premeditation is the issue, "the issue is not your feelings," she said.
Prosecutors allege White showed up at Jubie’s home and immediately attacked her after she opened the door. Neighbors who heard the violence spotted a man running from the scene dressed in a suit.
White was arrested after officers followed a trail of footprints on the frost-covered ground from Jubie’s home to the home of White’s parents, two houses away. A blood-soaked suit was found inside.
Genetic tests show that the slain woman’s blood was spattered on White’s clothing, shoes, a backpack and on his right ear, according to court papers.
White initially denied involvement in the killing, but later told investigators Jubie was killed by one of his friends, documents show.
