LACEY — A Thurston County sheriff’s spokesman said deputies have unearthed the remains of a human infant from the yard of a Lacey.-area home.
Lt. Greg Elwin said a nurse at River Ridge High School notified officers after being told Tuesday by a 16-year-old girl that she delivered a stillborn infant last June.
The girl reportedly told no one about the pregnancy at the time except the 16-year-old father.
Elwin said the two teens “decided the way to handle this was to bury the child.”
The remains were found Tuesday, reportedly buried in a shoebox.
Detectives interviewed the two teens and released them to their parents.
County Coroner Gary Warnock said the remains will be taken to the King County medical examiner’s office, where a forensic anthropologist will try to determine age, as well as the time, cause and manner of death.
Investigators have yet to determine whether a crime occurred.
