Deputy nearly run down in pursuit

EVERETT — A Bothell man, 28, was arrested Saturday after allegedly leading police on a car chase that included nearly running down a deputy.

A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy was outside a house that afternoon along 116th Place SE in south Everett.

A man who was believed to be a resident of the home had a felony warrant, according to an affidavit filed in Everett District Court.

Around 2:30 p.m., a car left the driveway, according to court papers. A man was driving, and a woman was in the passenger seat.

The deputy attempted to pull the car over, but it sped off.

The chase wound down 4th Avenue W, around a few cross-streets, and then back up 4th the other direction, court records show. The chase reached estimated speeds of up to 70 mph.

By that time, a second deputy had joined the pursuit behind his colleague.

The second deputy watched as the white car turned into a cul-de-sac. The first deputy then got out of his patrol car and drew his gun.

At that point, the Bothell man reportedly put the car into reverse, missing the first deputy by inches, according to the affidavit. The second deputy tried to stop the car by ramming it, but the car shimmied away from the impact and out of the cul-de-sac.

The car was found later, ditched along Center Road. Deputies developed information that led them to the man and woman believed to be involved.

The Bothell man was booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault and eluding police. He turned out not to be the man that deputies originally had been looking for to arrest on a warrant, court papers show.

The Bothell man reportedly told investigators that he fled the traffic stop because he didn’t want to go to jail. He also told police that he had gone to the south Everett house to pick up someone else so they could go buy heroin.

No injuries were reported in the chase, sheriff’s bureau chief Kevin Prentiss said Monday. There was minimal damage to a patrol car and to the car the Bothell man was driving.
