BOSTON — Tamerlan Tsarnaev passed the U.S. citizenship test and denied terrorism links months before he and his brother detonated two bombs that killed three people at the Boston Marathon finish line.
The details come from heavily redacted Department of Homeland Security documents provided to The Boston Globe.
Tsarnaev died several days after the April 15, 2013, bombings during a police shootout.
His brother, Dzhokhar, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was convicted and sentenced to death.
The brothers were ethnic Chechens from Russia.
Documents unsealed Monday in the case of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s friend Robel Phillipos show the younger Tsarnaev told federal agents after his arrest that he and his brother had acted alone because they couldn’t trust anyone.
Phillipos is appealing an eight-year sentence for lying to federal agents.
