EVERETT — Election returns Tuesday night suggested that a challenger might knock off an appointed member of the Everett City Council.
Judy Tuohy and Richard Anderson are vying for Position 7 on the council. She was leading with 57.1 percent of the vote Tuesday. Anderson trailed with 42 percent.
Anderson, an accountant, was appointed to the seat in 2013 after Shannon Affholter resigned.
Tuohy is the executive director of the Schack Arts Center, and has said the city needs to take a different approach in tackling its structural deficit that better reflects the needs of the residents.
The city’s efforts so far have been controversial for apparently favoring new taxes and fees over cutting its own expenses.
Tuohy was happy with the initial results, but wanted to wait and see what subsequent vote counts would bring.
While out campaigning, Tuohy said, “Folks really appreciated being listened to, and that is the one message that came across more than anything. They want to feel part of the process and feel listened to.”
Anderson said he was doing fine with the preliminary results, but otherwise wouldn’t comment. “We’ll wait and see what happens,” he said.
The race is for a one-year unexpired term. Whoever wins the seat would have to run again in 2015 for a full term.
