BEIRUT — Syrian activists say dozens of people have been killed or injured in heavy shelling by Syrian tanks in a northern town.
An activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, says the attack occurred Friday in the town of Maaret al-Numan in the province of Idlib.
The town is 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Jisr al-Shughour, where the Syrian military launched a major operation Friday against anti-government protesters and mutinous security forces.
Syria’s state-run television says gunmen opened fire on police stations in Maaret al-Numan, causing casualties among security officials.
