DRUMMOND, Mont. — An investigation into a drive-by shooting on Interstate 90 in western Montana found the victim fired back in a failed effort to hit a tire and stop the assailant.
Matthew Colbert of Vancouver, Wash., pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of attempted deliberate homicide for the shooting early July 26 near Drummond.
Colbert, who is 38, is charged with firing a handgun from his pickup truck at a car, breaking out windows.
The Montana Standard obtained charging documents that say driver Danny Muir fired a shot from his own .22-caliber pistol at the suspect’s rear tire, but missed.
Court records say Colbert told Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson that there were papers in his truck from the president and the Joint Chiefs of Staff granting him immunity from arrest.
