AUBURN – A 10-mile car chase through south King County ended Monday after a King County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed the driver of a stolen car, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said. A passenger in the stolen car was arrested.
The deputy who fired the fatal shot was being treated for injuries Monday evening, Deputy Tiffany Atwood said.
The high-speed chase began around 2:45 p.m. in Federal Way when a deputy saw a Pontiac Firebird run a red light, Atwood said.
When officers tried to stop the car, the male driver sped off. A quick check of the vehicle’s license plate showed it did not match the car, and officers determined the vehicle had been stolen, Atwood said.
At one point, the car briefly stopped for deputies, then raced off again, Atwood said.
The fleeing car later hit another vehicle. As a deputy approached the car, the driver ran over the officer’s foot and struck his leg, Atwood said.
That’s when the injured deputy fired a shot, hitting the driver in the chest. The passenger then took control of the vehicle, driving another two miles, Atwood said.
The chase ended in Auburn, when deputies boxed in the car after it spun out, Atwood said.
The 21-year-old male passenger tried to flee and got into a fight with the injured deputy, wounding the officer’s hand, Atwood said. The original driver was dead at the scene.
Neither he nor the passenger was immediately identified.
The officer was being treated at an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known and he was not immediately identified.
