BLAINE — The Washington State Patrol says an 80-year-old Canadian driver who tried to make a U-turn in the median of I-5 near Blaine ended up colliding with a commercial truck.
Trooper Mark Francis told The Bellingham Herald that Leonard Bessner of West Vancouver, B.C., moved from the right lane of southbound I-5 toward a gravel strip in the median. The trooper said the man cut off a big rig driver in the left lane on Thursday afternoon.
The rig jackknifed when the tractor cab collided with the back of Bessner’s car. The car ended up in the median.
The State Patrol said Bessner hit his head but was otherwise unhurt. Troopers said he acted dazed. According to Francis, the man said he “just wanted to go back to Canada.”
The truck driver, also from British Columbia, was unhurt.
