EVERETT — Detectives don’t know who ran down the woman who was found dead along the U.S. 2 trestle on Monday.
They do know that the person was driving a large sport utility vehicle. The driver stopped briefly at the crash scene, then fled, according to a Washington State Patrol press release.
The woman was walking along U.S. 2 at the Home Acres Road exit when she was hit, according to a State Patrol press release. Her body was in a triangular area between the offramp and the highway and may not have been visible to passing motorists, according to the release.
Crews working on U.S. 2 about 2 p.m. spotted her on the eastbound offramp to Ebey Island. Investigators scouted the area for evidence trying to figure out what happened. Detectives found vehicle parts and tire marks near the body.
The woman is believed to be in her mid-20s to early 30s.
The State Patrol on Tuesday didn’t release a description of the suspect vehicle beyond identifying it as an SUV.
The Snohomish County medical examiner hasn’t released her name pending family notification.
Walking on a freeway is illegal and dangerous, trooper Mark Francis said. Troopers don’t often come in contact with pedestrians on U.S. 2, he said.
Hundreds of people each year are stopped by law enforcement officers for walking on freeways, according to State Patrol data.
