MONROE — An elderly man who died in a head-on crash last week inexplicably changed lanes just before the crash and began driving in the wrong lane, Monroe Police Sgt. Cherie Harris said Monday.
Robert E. Smith, 82, of Everett died about 7:20 Friday night on Highway 522 on an overpass above 179th Street, according to the county medical examiner’s office.
Smith was westbound in his 1990 Dodge Dynasty when he put on his turn signal and moved into the oncoming lane, Harris said.
His car struck a 1984 motor home driven by an unidentified woman, Harris said.
The woman was treated at Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus for minor injuries, she said.
The crash, which remains under investigation, prompted police to close the highway until 11 p.m.
