Public response to the Interfaith Association of Snohomish County’s call to help hurricane evacuees with household items has been so great that there will be a special drop-off event on Thursday in Everett.
Since Monday, the organization has received at least 150 calls from people offering to donate items to help evacuees as they move into housing here, said Janet Pope, the organization’s executive director.
“It’s just such an outpouring of generosity and compassion,” she said.
The greatest needs are for beds and dressers; pots, pans and other kitchen items; bathroom items; and general household furnishings. Items may be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 2810 Lombard Ave. in Everett. Donations probably will be needed until the end of January, Pope said.
Barbara Erlendson, office manager for the interfaith group, said she has been impressed with the quality of items being donated.
An estimated 400 people displaced by the hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast states are now living in Snohomish County. Some have been staying temporarily with family or friends and now are setting up their own apartments, Pope said.
Anyone displaced by the hurricanes who needs help may call Sharon Bouscher, the association’s case manager for Katrina and Rita client services, at 425-388-7253.
