If you celebrate the holidays with a drink, don’t drive.
Police throughout Snohomish County will be out in force to catch drunken drivers through Jan. 3.
“We hope to prevent a senseless tragedy from occurring during the holidays,” said Tracy McMillan, coordinator of the Snohomish County DUI task force.
Drunken driving is the primary cause of fatal crashes in Washington state. In 2003, 14 people died in Snohomish County in alcohol-related vehicle accidents, according to the task force.
“DUI isn’t always about good and people, it’s about good and bad choices,” McMillan said.
She encouraged people to plan ahead, use designated drivers, stay in hotels or get taxis.
“Grab the keys or do whatever it takes to make sure the person behind the wheel is sober,” McMillan said.
The local “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed,” traffic safety patrols are funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Police from Arlington, Everett, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Snohomish, Sultan and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office are participating.
