HOQUIAM — Hoquiam police and Hoquiam High School are taking dramatic steps to emphasize the danger of impaired driving, which reportedly kills someone every 32 minutes.
KXRO and KBKW reported a program Thursday will read an obituary over school loudspeakers every 32 minutes and paramedics will remove students from classrooms. “Victims” will have their faces painted white and will not interact with other students for the rest of the day.
There also will be a mock crash in the school parking lot, complete with ambulances and a helicopter evacuation.
The program wraps up with an assembly in which the entire student body is addressed by a man whose decision to drive under the influence killed his friend.
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission and Hoquiam businesses are helping sponsor the event.
