EDMONDS — Mayor Gary Haakenson said the city has completed the purchase of the Marina Beach property from the Union Oil Co. of California, also known as Unocal.
The 4.5-acre site has more than 1,000 feet of Puget Sound shoreline and is adjacent to almost 16 acres of state Department of Natural Resources public tidelands.
The price was $3.1 million, which is less than the appraised value of between $3.4 million and $4.7 million. The state also provided some funding.
For 10 years, the city has held a lease to the land, which has been used as a park visited by an estimated 100,000 people each year.
The city now has seven public parks along its downtown waterfront.
Unocal operated an oil and gas mixing plant on its property from the 1920s to 1992. Marina Beach has been thoroughly tested and is considered free of pollution, officials said.
