Edmonds resident Keva Vaughan-McMorrow is the first woman ever to be selected for a second time by the Washington State Music Teachers Association as a Commissioned Composer of the Year. She was last selected in 2010 for her chamber octet, “Evening River Echoes.” In 2018, she received a commission for a solo piano work, “Antarctic Odyssey.”
The piano piece was inspired by a trip to the Antarctic. It includes four movements — “Stasis,” “Volitilizations,” “Passages” and “Awakening” — and includes recordings of shrieking Antarctic winds, cracking glaciers and penguins.
Vaughan-McMorrow will premiere “Antarctic Odyssey” at 4 p.m. June 21 in the Fort Vancouver Ballroom of Heathman Lodge in Vancouver as part of a conference of Washington and Oregon music teachers. The piece will then be submitted to a national competition. Guests can attend the recital performance; tickets are $10.
