EDMONDS — Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged the homes of four families at an Edmonds condominium complex.
The fire started in a chimney pipe outside a building at the Mill Creek Park Condominiums, investigators believe. The blaze forced the evacuation of more than 40 people Tuesday night, condominium manager Jeff Hilde said.
To douse the blaze, firefighters had to cut through the roof of the building in the 7200 block of 224th Street SW, Edmonds Fire Marshall John Westfall said.
It caused quite a bit of damage to the roof, Westfall said.
By the time tenants alerted him, Hilde said he could already see flames poking up from the roof of M building. People were in the building when the fire started, but everyone got out safely before the fire grew too large, Hilde said.
“The Edmonds Fire Department responded rapidly,” Hilde said. “They did an unbelievable job. They were military efficient.”
More than 40 people were evacuated while firefighters got the fire under control. Coffee, tea and snacks were given to residents in the complex’s board room. Some people brought blankets.
The Snohomish County chapter of the Red Cross helped find housing for the four families who were displaced from their units.
“They’re pretty shook up,” Hilde said of the displaced families.
Firefighters from Lynnwood and Snohomish County Fire District 1 helped Edmonds extinguishthe flames.
