EDMONDS — Firefighters in Edmonds are raising money to build a 9/11 memorial park at the corner of Sprague Street and Sixth Avenue N., near the police and fire stations.
The project, including the acquisition of a steel beam from the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, is years in the making, firefighter Dave Erickson said.
The hope is to incorporate the one-ton steel beam into an art display at the park, he said. The prototype for the display shows two stainless steel towers and an American flag made with pieces of glass. The colors of the glass pieces represent the lives lost in the terrorist attacks, with different colors for emergency responders, in addition to other symbols.
The beam is on display at Fire Station 17, 275 6th Ave. N.
“It’s going to be one of those places, the more you sit and look around, the more things will pop in your mind,” he said. “You’ll see more the longer you sit there.”
The estimated cost of the memorial is $150,000. No public money can be used. The firefighters are asking for donations from the community and businesses.
