EDMONDS — The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Edmonds School District a $250,000 grant to enhance emergency response.
Edmonds was one of only four school districts in the state to receive the grant.
The grant will assist in the development and implementation of the district’s comprehensive emergency response and recovery plan.
"This grant will allow us to train staff on how to use our plan, conduct drills and purchase materials that will help us make our written plan a living, functional document," said Bret Carlstad, director of emergency services.
School staff will receive training on the response and recovery plan, which coordinates responses to emergencies in schools and across the district. Others will receive training in building damage assessment and mental health crisis response.
Equipment, such as communication equipment, also will be purchased with the grant money. An advisory panel of staff, police, fire and community members will oversee the spending of the grant.
The school district serves the communities of Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Woodway.
The emergency plan can be seen on the school district’s Web site at www.edmonds.wednet.edu.
