Edmonds-Woodway High School graduate Amia Nash was named fourth runner-up in the nonprofit America’s Homecoming Queen 2011 competition that wrapped up July 26 in Anaheim, Calif.
Iowa’s homecoming queen took the top spot in the scholarship competition, followed by teens from North Carolina, Nevada and Georgia.
As fourth runner-up, Nash will receive a scholarship; she is to be notified of the details in September.
The competition, run by a Memphis, Tenn.,-based nonprofit, has girls compete in personal interviews and a prom gown category. There is no swimsuit or talent competition.
Nash was her high school’s homecoming queen as well as the Edmonds School District’s Athlete of the Year. She is headed to Santa Clara University in California on a track and field scholarship. She is considering a major in bio-chemistry with an eye toward medical school.
Nash also ran cross country and played basketball, served in student government and finished her senior year with a 4.0 GPA.
As the faculty-chosen student speaker at her commencement, Nash also shared her struggles with depression, encouraging her peers to be sensitive to each other and not rely on outward appearances.
