BEND, Ore. — Deschutes National Forest officials are considering parking lot restrictions at a welcome station under construction in an area popular with elk.
The Bend Bulletin reports the parking lot may be closed off during winter months, forcing visitors to find other access to trails. Part of the lot may be open from April 1 to Nov. 30 for use as a trailhead.
The delayed $1.7 million project is expected to be completed by spring. The Cascade Lakes Welcome Station will likely serve as a center for mountain biking and hiking.
District wildlife biologist Corey Heath says Oregon’s Department of Fish and Wildlife was against plans for the center because of the elk issues.
Heath said elk have had to move around due to development in the past.
