EVERETT — Two English police officers bicycling from Canada to Mexico to raise money for charities will arrive in Everett on Monday.
They’ll be greeted and escorted by some of the city’s bike patrol officers, Everett police Sgt. Pete Grassi said.
Neil Smith and Tony Spry plan to spend 30 days pedaling nearly 2,000 miles in Cycle Challenge 2002 for The Prostate Cancer Charity and the National Asthma Campaign, both based in London, the American Lung Association and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Smith is a police dog handler with the Suffolk (England) Constabulary and a former Royal Air Force officer.
Spry is a police constable with Suffolk Constabulary, where he has worked for 28 years, and a member of its Operational Firearms Unit.
Norman Wilcock will drive the team’s backup vehicle and provide support for the cyclists, such as arranging sponsorship and food.
The team arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Saturday. They’re scheduled to travel to Ferndale in preparation for the ride, which starts Monday morning in Blaine.
The officers will ride from Blaine to Everett on Monday, and spend the night under arrangements made by Grassi.
They’ll hit the road again Tuesday and ride to Seattle and Bellevue. On Wednesday, they’ll continue on to Tenino, and on Thursday to Longview. They should reach Oregon by early Friday. After biking through Portland, they’ll switch to a coastal route.
